Where did the word "Fairy" come from? 

Fairy comes from Faerie (French)
Faerie comes from Fa'ae (Gallic)
Fa'ae comes from Fata (Latin, meaning the fates)

Fa'ae or fae or fay all mean about the same thing: a group of
special magical beings that look a little human with powers that go
from good to evil. That's why you read about both the good fairy in
the Wizard of Oz and the wicked Witch of the North. But here all we
care about are the good ones.
